In the beginning of September 2008, my girl was going to get our Clown Knife fish some feeder goldfish at the local pet store (it eats about 10-15 a week). Unfortunately the pet store owner didn’t have any goldfish, so instead he offered her some Convict Cichlids that he was trying to get rid of.

She brought about 10 home and put them in the tank for food. Since our Clown Knife fish usually eats at night, he only picked off 3 of them before the time I got home from work. When I got home, we chatted about them not being normal feeder fish and since we both thought that they were pretty cool looking, decided to move the ones who were still there into our smaller fish tank that had a Betta and 3 African frogs in it.

The next day the Betta, whom my girl loved so much and had for at least 4 years, was killed by them ! We later looked them up on-line and found that they were known as “The bar-room brawler and reproducing rabbit of the fish world. This cichlid is a mean S.O.B. that will hold it’s own against fish more than twice it’s size!”. Since I’ve always wanted to try breeding Cichlids, we trekked on with them.

About 10 days later, hoping that they’d breed, we noticed our biggest Cichlid hanging out with one smaller one, who’s belly looked like it was about to burst! 3 days later, we became the proud parents of about 35 little Convict Cichlid babies!
