On weekends I usually watch quite a few cooking shows on TV. The majority are on public television since I hate commercials and tend to love the underdogs who don’t have 800lb gorillas backing them up (i.e. Food Network).
I’ve been working on a page for my blog about “foodie” links since March 24, 2010, updating it with the names I wanted to blog about using a note, computer, or phone when I saw a show again or remembered someone later on. Today I finally got in the mood to clean it up and publish it. I hope you enjoy the mix of all of them and the rarity of some. I’ve made recipes or used knowledge gained from each of them and would highly recommend them all!
Alan Wake, an Xbox 360 exclusive, and Red Dead Redemption come out tomorrow!
I headed over to GameStop and pre-ordered both today. It’s a midnight release but I think I’ll wait until tomorrow to pick them up. I probably won’t be getting into them until the weekend anyway but I had to go just to be sure I get the pre-order extras! I want an Alan Wake T-shirt for my avatar .
Wow, the day has finally come! Today I unlocked the Forza Motorsport 3 “Solid Gold” Achievement, without a doubt one of the hardest Achievements I’ve worked on getting. This Achievement probably takes around 300 hours to get and encompasses almost 1000 races ranging from 5 to 50 minutes each giving you 80 points if your crazy enough to attempt it.
I do have to admit thought that I did use the “Hire Driver” option on probably a little less than half of the 1000 races, especially the 50 minute endurance ones, once I found out you could do it that is . I left the “Drift Lap” 5G Achievement for last since I figured it’d be fun to try to get as the final one for the full 1000G, and on previous tries for it I got pretty close to 100,000 drift points so I don’t think it’ll be too bad.
I recorded a video of the last race, last lap (1 minute), and the 80G Achievement popping up for prosperity and threw it up on YouTube. Enjoy!
I finally was able to compile and setup the latest Google Chromium O/S source for use on my NetBook(s) (using version 5.0.363.0 if anyone is interested). I last tried it out back in November 2009 and was surprised to see that they’ve added Adobe Flash 10! Oddly enough, HTML5 video appears to not be working, I just get an error stating that “Your browser does not currently recognize any of the video formats available” when trying a YouTube HTML5 beta video. Hmm, either HTML5 video playback is just broken on this build or their trying to iron out bugs in Flash and wanted to force everyone into using it for video instead for now. I can confirm that other non-video related HTML5 coded sites work.
I also found that the build doesn’t boot on my EEEPC 701 netbook, while the old November build worked fine, even with the WiFi. This release now works fine on my Lenovo S10 netbook, although WiFi doesn’t work due to proprietary Broadcomm firmware being needed (although from the Google Groups posts, it appears to be getting addressed).
Here’s a picture of the OS I just took with a YouTube video playing back in Flash (and a right-click on the video to show the Flash menu):
I dusted off tha barbeque after its long winter hibernation and cooked a tasty grilled vegetables (green and red bell peppers, red onion, cherry tomatoes, and mushrooms), grilled sourdough bread with garlic, butter, olive oil, and Gorgonzola on it, and New York Steak dinner tonight. Mmm! I snapped a few pictures along the way, since its been so long since I left you (Mr. Barbeque).
I stumbled upon a Google Labs project called Page Speed and wanted to mention that this combined with Firebug on Mozilla Firefox are truly must have’s for any web site admin.
It helps you do things like leverage browser caching, pointing to files which should or could be cached. It helps to reduce the amount of DNS lookups by pointing out every link with a DNS request. It mentions things which could be compressed using gzip to save on transfer sizes, and tells you things which might be buggy in Internet Exploiter .
Check it out and let me know if ya liked it or hadn’t heard of it before (Page Speed that is, Firebug has been out for a long time so it’s a little bit of old news).
I just installed and setup php-eaccelerator, an open-source PHP accelerator which is a fork of the old MMCache I remember looking into a long time ago. I’m already honestly noticing a huge performance improvement!
I’ve also enabled MySQL query cache on my box today as well. Hopefully these changes will make my site load a little faster and not cause me any adverse affects (i.e. stale data).
I’m also thinking about setting up the WordPress plugin WP Super Cache but have yet to take the plunge. I try to keep services as “vanilla” as I can if at all possible to minimize exploits.
Google unleashes skipfish, a web application security scanner akin to Nessus
"The safety of the Internet is of paramount importance to Google, and helping web developers build secure, reliable web applications is an important part of the equation."
I really am amazed how hard Google works to make the Internet better for everyone, one day, one service, one app at a time.
I’ve been wanting to try a potato soup recipe I saw a few years ago on a show called Scandinavian Cooking and finally got motivated to try it out last week.
I put smoked salmon on mine and salami on my non-fish loving lady’s dish. It’s easy to make and very versatile. Unfortunately my purple potato soup part wasn’t very purple… I tried making a swirl of purple soup on top of the white soup, but I guess I shouldn’t have put cream in that one. Oh well, it still tasted good and I’ll definitely be trying it again!
